On Saturday the 16th of February 2019 the 8th Open Scandinavian Winter Swimming Championships - the stage of the World Cup was held in Skellefteå city in northern Sweden. The local association Dark & Cold arranges this “cool” event, which attracts winter swimmers and journalists from around the globe.
“But this year the Skellefte River Water Regulation Company and Statkraft made reducing the flow from the Kvistforsen power station during the competition, which means that we can also swim against the current and thus have additional races over the longer distances of 50 and 100 metres”, explains Lars Westerlund from Dark & Cold.
This time, the swimmers were competing in 25 meter breaststroke and butterfly, 50 meter breaststroke and freestyle and 100 meter freestyle. In addition, relays were performed 4 × 25 meters where both sexes had to be represented in the team.
About 300 winterswimmers from 18 countries participated in this year’s competition.
The opening ceremony was held on the evening of February 15th by Lorents Burman, chairman of the municipality board and Aleksandr Jakovlev, vice chairman of IWSA.
In conjunction with the inauguration of the world cup competition, a competition in “wake poetry” was held, where nine finalists performed poems standing in a wake.
There was also a seminar at Campus Skellefteå university with speeches made by Lars Westerlund and Jarkko Enqvist, Dark & Cold, Aleksandr Jakovlev, IWSA and Fredrik Nyström, Linköping university.
